Sign of the Dove print shop opens.

September 9, 1674

Operated by John Foster, it is located near today’s 53 Boylston Street. The first printing press in Boston, it is allowed to operate only after the General Court, in May 1674, repeals the 1638 law that restricted printing presses to Cambridge. The press and type were purchased from Marmaduke Johnson, who had brought them from England and set them up initially in 1665. Foster’s first publication is the text of a 63-page sermon preached at the inauguration of Gov. John Leverett on May 3, 1767.
